Historical Map of Six Nations Revealed, 1777

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A historical map created by Guy Johnson in 1777 details the country of the Six Nations and parts of the adjacent colonies. This map is addressed to William Tryon, the Captain General and Governor in Chief of the Province of New York. It includes key features such as Indian villages, chief towns or large villages, and Indian paths, along with a boundary that was settled in 1768.

In addition to this map, a second map archived at Hobart and William Smith Colleges marks the location of Kanadesaga, which was the capital of the Seneca Nation. This site is near what is now North Street and Preemption Road in Geneva, New York.

The publication from Hobart and William Smith Colleges highlights the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, particularly focusing on the Seneca Nation and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The full story can be accessed through the institution's website.
