Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Celebrated
Staff Report / Bendlocal.org
Today marked Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at R.E. Jewell Elementary in Bend, Oregon. The school organized a lively walk for students and their families, who were greeted with hot chocolate upon arrival to help warm up in the chilly weather.
Among the attendees was School Board Chair Marcus LeGrand, who spoke about the significant impact Ruby Bridges had as a child when she became the first and only Black student to attend Franz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960. This act made her a national symbol of the civil rights movement.
Ruby Bridges, who celebrated her 70th birthday in September, shared her message: "My message is really that racism has no place in the hearts and minds of our children."
