Arizona State University in Tempe celebrates the 78th birthday of its iconic mascot, Sparky the Sun Devil.

Sparky was adopted as the university's mascot by the ASU Student Council on November 20, 1946. Over the decades, Sparky has inspired school spirit, created memorable experiences, and supported the Sun Devils at events in Tempe, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and other locations.
