Elevations Cause Snowfall Disparities in New York
Staff Report / FLXlocal.org
Residents of Redfield, NY, and Harrisburg, NY, are experiencing notable differences in snow accumulation due to their varying elevations. Redfield, situated at an elevation of 1,248 feet, received significantly less snow compared to Harrisburg, which is 1,623 feet high, resulting in a 375-foot difference in elevation between the two locations.
The snowfall from the previous night and today has shown to be very elevation-dependent. The two sites are located less than 30 miles apart, yet their snowfall amounts reflect the impact of elevation on weather patterns. Images from the New York State Mesonet and reports from the National Weather Service in Buffalo illustrate these differences.
