Officer-Involved Shooting in Jacksonville: Details Revealed
Staff Report / jaxlocal.org
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has provided details about an officer-involved shooting that took place on November 11, 2024, in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida.
Officer G. Robinson responded to a report of an aggravated assault with a firearm on South McDuff Avenue. Upon arrival at the parking lot, Officer Robinson encountered 18-year-old Cerry Banks, who was asked to show his hands. Instead of complying, Banks displayed a firearm and fled the scene. During a foot chase, Banks turned toward Officer Robinson while still holding the gun, prompting Officer Robinson to discharge his firearm. After dropping the weapon, Banks continued to flee but was later found injured inside a nearby drainage pipe. Paramedics were on standby to assist once he was in handcuffs.
The incident began when a complainant, whose 13-year-old daughter had received inappropriate texts from Banks, arranged to confront him. Upon meeting, Banks revealed the firearm and made a threatening comment, leading the complainant to call the police.
Banks faces multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, two counts of lewd or lascivious conduct with a minor, traveling to meet a minor after using a computer to solicit a child, and unlawful use of a two-way communication device.
The State Attorney’s Office will review the incident to evaluate the legality of the officers' actions. Following that review, JSO will conduct its internal evaluation to confirm that protocol was followed, after which findings will be presented to the Sheriff. The JSO is releasing this information as part of its commitment to transparency. The investigation is ongoing, and conclusions regarding the incident are pending. Viewer discretion is advised for the graphic videos being released.
