Winter Advisory: Heavy Snow Expected Through Friday

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, and Lewis counties from 6 PM this evening through noon on Friday.

The advisory indicates that lake-enhanced and upslope rain will begin late this afternoon and transition to heavy wet snow, particularly in higher elevations of the Southern Tier and Tug Hill tonight.

Forecasted snow accumulations will vary significantly based on elevation, with the highest amounts expected on hilltops above 1500 feet, where totals may reach 6 inches or more. Areas below this elevation may receive much less snow, and wet flakes are possible across the Lake Plains, but no significant accumulations are expected there.

Travel conditions may become hazardous, especially on higher elevation roadways, due to heavy wet snow accumulation. There is some uncertainty in the expected snowfall amounts, particularly on Chautauqua Ridge and the hilltops of Allegany County.

After this event, snow and rain coverage is expected to decrease Friday afternoon, with a potential increase in precipitation again on Saturday, including possible wet snow or a rain/snow mix at higher elevations. Minor accumulations are anticipated Friday night and Saturday night.

This information has been issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, NY.
