The Maramor: Columbus' Historic Dining Treasure

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

The Maramor, a historic restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, was founded by Mary Love in 1920 at 112 E. Broad St. It moved to its new location at 137 E. Broad St. in 1927. The restaurant was notable for being primarily managed by women, with Mary Love at the helm and her husband Malcolm contributing to its operations.

The Maramor gained recognition in the dining world, attracting many famous individuals, including Broadway stars like Lynne Fontanne and Helen Hayes. Restaurant critic Duncan Hines awarded it a four-star review.

In 1957, Danny Deeds took over as manager and eventually became the owner of The Maramor. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed its doors in 1969 and was demolished in 1972 to make way for the PNC Bank Building, which was completed in 1977.

Today, the site is known as the Preston Centre, located between 4th and Lazelle streets, and much of the PNC Bank Building has been converted into apartments. The Columbus Metropolitan Library is also located in Downtown Columbus.

Currently, the Maramor Chocolate and Gifts operates Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM and Sundays from 12 PM to 10 PM, featuring gourmet food, charcoal steaks, and a cocktail lounge. It hosts shows at 5 PM for dinner and 8:30 PM for supper, with ticket prices at $3.50.
