Cornell Expands Language House to Include ASL.
Cornell University announced that students interested in American Sign Language (ASL) can now apply to live in the Language House for the 2025-26 academic year. The house is located within Toni Morrison Hall on North Campus and will host 44 students who share an interest in language study.
The Language House, which already includes groups learning French, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean, is expanding to incorporate ASL. Brenda Schertz, a senior lecturer of ASL in the Department of Linguistics at the College of Arts and Sciences, said that adding ASL will help build a signing community on campus. Students will have opportunities to engage with the language through social and cultural events, including organized campus events and trips to Rochester, a city with one of the largest Deaf communities per capita in the United States.
