Cornell Lab’s eBird Hits 2 Billion Sightings Milestone
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and its eBird program have reached significant milestones. The program, which allows people worldwide to submit bird sightings and sounds for scientific research, has recorded 2 billion bird sightings. This achievement reflects the program's growing popularity and its contribution to the study of birds and their habitats.
Another milestone was reached in August when the lab recorded 3 million sound recordings. The 2 billionth bird sighting was recorded by Alfonso Auerbach, an active eBirder who has submitted more than 8,000 checklists since 2014. Auerbach observed a tropical kingbird in Honduras on June 2 during an afternoon walk, and his submission marked a historic moment for the program.
Cornell University provided the detailed report on these milestones.
