Geneva City Schools Rolls out Gym Communication Boards for Inclusion
Geneva City Schools officials said at West Street School that movement, communication and inclusion came together through a collaboration between the district’s physical education and speech-language departments.
Staff worked to create communication boards designed specifically for use in the gym, helping students express needs, make choices, follow directions and interact with peers and teachers during physical education activities.
For some students who use communication devices or other assisted communication tools, movement-based environments can make communication more challenging. These low-tech, visually supported boards provide an accessible, real-time alternative that helps ensure all students can fully participate and stay engaged during class.
The project reflects Geneva’s continued commitment to equitable access and meaningful learning experiences for every student.
Special thanks to partners at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva 2030 and BOCES assistive technology support for helping bring this work to life.
The release included the hashtags #PantherPride, #GenevaCSD, #EquitableAccess, #InclusiveEducation and #StudentSupport.
