Colonel Elmer Ellsworth: First Union Officer to Die in Civil War

by Todd Vandersline / Albanylocal.org

On May 24, 1861, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, from Malta, NY, of the 11th New York Volunteers, was fatally shot while removing a Confederate flag from a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. He became the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. In honor of Ellsworth, Albany native George William Warren composed a piece of sheet music titled "A Requiem." The sheet music, printed by Sarony, Major & Knapp of New York, features a portrait of Ellsworth and vignettes depicting his service and death in the Civil War. This commemoration serves to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country and their families.
