Arrest made in Hudson Avenue hit-and-run incident

A 25-year-old man from Watervliet has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident on Hudson Avenue in Albany. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at around 12:01 a.m. when the man, identified as Austin Breyette, was driving an illegal dirt bike at a high speed and struck an 18-year-old female, Alexa Kropf, causing serious injuries.

Witnesses reported that the man was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of groups of people before hitting the victim. After the collision, he fled the scene. Kropf was treated on the scene by emergency medical personnel and then taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital in critical condition.

Following an investigation by the Albany Police Department, Breyette was identified as the suspect and was arrested at a residence in Watervliet. He has been charged with Assault 2nd, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and cited for numerous violations under the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. He is expected to appear in Albany City Criminal Court for arraignment.

Police Chief Eric Hawkins expressed that the department is dedicated to holding accountable anyone who commits acts of violence in the city. He mentioned that their thoughts and prayers are with Alexa Kropf and her family as she continues to recover.
