Albany Institute showcases unique Civil War-era playing cards.

Staff Report / Albanylocal.org

The Albany Institute of History & Art in Albany, New York, showcased a unique deck of playing cards from 1862-1864. The deck features suits depicting eagles, shields, stars, and flags. Instead of traditional faces, a Civil War Colonel replaces the King, a Goddess of Liberty represents the Queen, and a Major stands for the Jack. The deck belonged to Bartholomew Schermerhorn DeForest (1823-1886), who served as First Lieutenant in Company A, 81st New York Volunteers during the Civil War. The regiment was organized in Albany on February 18, 1862. The cards are part of the union cards made by American Card Co. located in New York City. The deck was gifted to the institute by Anthea de Forest Mellon and DeForest Mellon, Jr. in 2017.
