Data Empowering Indigenous Communities for Future Advocacy

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

Three research projects led by Michael Charles, an assistant professor in biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University, are aiding Indigenous communities across North America. These projects provide data that these communities can use to advocate for their futures.

Charles, who is a citizen of the Navajo Nation, emphasized the importance of making data useful for governance and advocacy. He noted that the information gathered can be used in court trials, to influence public policy, and for managing governance within the communities.

His research combines computational modeling with Indigenous advocacy, addressing critical issues such as the effects of climate change and forced migration on Indigenous food systems, as well as air pollution resulting from mining.
