LAFD Remembers Fireman Robert C. Gladden Today

Staff Report / LAXlocal.org

On November 25, 1968, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) remembers Fireman Robert C. Gladden, who died 56 years ago today. At 7:05 PM, LAFD Task Force 69, which included Engine 23 and Battalion 9, was dispatched to a residential fire in the Pacific Palisades area.

Upon arrival, the firefighters swiftly managed to extinguish the flames in the large single-family home. During the salvage and overhaul operations, Fireman Gladden suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 47 years old and had served with the LAFD since 1947, spending 21 years in total, with 12 of those years at Engine 69.

Gladden is survived by his wife, Marie, and their two children, Laura and Robert, Jr. Robert Jr. eventually followed in his father's footsteps and joined the LAFD. Tragically, both father and son faced significant challenges during their careers. In a July 2, 1985 wildfire in Baldwin Hills, which destroyed 71 homes and resulted in three fatalities, Marie Gladden was among those who lost their lives. On that day, Robert Jr. was assigned to LAFD Engine Company 82 and was one of the firefighters responding to the emergency.
