Jacksonville Officers Shoot Suspect After Stabbing Incident
Staff Report / jaxlocal.org
Late Tuesday night, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was involved in a shooting after responding to a stabbing incident. The event began when an off-duty sergeant noticed a man attacking a construction worker with a knife at a site near Main Street and I-295.
The injured worker called for help, prompting the off-duty sergeant to intervene. A pursuit followed, which ended at Duval Station Road near North Main Street. When the sergeants confronted the suspect, he lunged at them with a knife. Attempts to subdue him with a Taser were unsuccessful as he continued to advance.
In response, the sergeants discharged their weapons, hitting the suspect. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Benjamin Kubi, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
This incident marks the eighth officer-involved shooting by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year. The State Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation, as is standard procedure following such events.
