Graduates Celebrate Completion of Caring Workforce Training
Staff Report / LAXlocal.org
The Los Angeles County Economic Opportunity has announced the completion of its first cohort in the Caring Workforce Training program, a collaboration with the organization known as pwcsc. This program marks a key achievement for 18 individuals who have developed skills for careers as home health aides.
Over a period of two months, participants underwent training focused on state registration, advanced skills provided by the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI), paid on-the-job training, and education regarding worker rights and advocacy. The program also emphasized the importance of worker ownership in the caregiving sector.
As a result of the training, 15 graduates have successfully joined Courage and other care cooperatives, while 11 have begun providing respite care as part of their work-based learning experience. These graduates are contributing to the evolving care economy.
The Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is investing $1 million into supporting the caring workforce through funding sourced from the American Rescue Plan. This initiative is part of their High Road Training Partnership programs, aimed at developing a skilled workforce in high-opportunity sectors that can earn competitive wages and take ownership in their professions.
Applications are now open for a second cohort set to begin on December 7th. Interested individuals can sign up at bit.ly/CaringWorkforceLACounty.
