Fire Department Warns: Fry Turkey Safely This Holiday
Staff Report / LAXlocal.org
The Los Angeles Fire Department is reminding residents about the dangers of deep frying turkeys as the holiday season approaches. Improper use of turkey fryers can lead to serious accidents and fires. Common issues with turkey fryers include:
- They can tip over easily, spilling hot oil and igniting.
- Fryers often overflow with oil when a turkey is placed inside, which can lead to flames engulfing the unit.
- Without thermostat controls, oil can overheat and catch fire.
- The handles and lids of fryers become extremely hot, risking severe burns.
For those who still intend to deep fry a turkey, the fire department advises the following safety precautions:
- Always fry outdoors on a flat surface, away from buildings, wooden decks, and covered patios.
- To measure the correct amount of oil, submerge a thawed turkey in the fryer, add enough water to cover the bird by half an inch, mark the water level, and then remove the turkey. Drain the water, dry everything thoroughly, and fill the fryer with oil to the marked level.
- Never leave the fryer unattended while in use.
- Ensure the turkey is completely thawed to avoid fire hazards.
- Lower and raise the turkey slowly to minimize splatter and prevent burns.
- Keep children and pets away from the fryer, even after cooking, as the oil remains very hot for hours.
- Use protective gear such as oven mitts, gloves, and safety goggles.
- Keep a Class K fire extinguisher nearby, which is designed for cooking oil fires.
These safety guidelines aim to prevent accidents and ensure a safer cooking experience during the holiday season.
